Big Sea Games is Gone

by Lure on September 1, 2010

…and unceremoniously at that.

We didn’t get a goodbye message like we did when the game community was shut down a year ago, we didn’t get a warning so we could say our final goodbyes, around 10:20am pacific time today, the chat disconnected and that was the end.

More screenshots of the final moments here. Thanks to everyone for coming to our little party and for making this the best fan community out there! Now, on to bigger and better things!

This site will remain open as an archive of Big Sea Games information and we’ll move forth providing hints and tips for these games at Treasure Quest on Facebook.

See our right sidebar for a collection of our Treasure Quest help and info pages.

Some former Big Sea players are finding new sites to play at and we’re all keeping in touch using the Big Sea Fans Community forums.

Such a shame that we lost this site. I have been on this site since it was Ion Thunder, I even paid for no ads. Now my mornings will be empty without this game site. Thank you for being there all these years.

I have not been with the company since October (2009), but wanted to say thank you to all the players of ION Thunder, Atlantis, Game Community and Big Sea. You made my job an awesome experience! I have missed you all and am just as sorry as ALL of you to see the site close. Words escape me and I could never do it justice anyway. Suffice to say I wish you all well and I hope to run into you around the gaming web!

Good luck all!!

I noticed that the main site is gone and the chat is doing the “unable to connect” junk but I am still able to play Plunder, I figured by now it would have disconnected me but it hasn’t. I doubt it will work when I go to refresh it though.

Will miss all of you various gamers. I hope we can meet up again in another gaming community but the ones that are being offered out there aren’t that great nor do the have the games BSG had. I will never understand their decision, other than to be greedy, but they had a great gaming community going.

Have fun out there Folks!

I really enjoyed Big Sea and will truely miss it….all those points I earned and now have to start new else where. Not sure where to go.

So sad. I was new, but I will still miss the games there.

I hope to see some of you on playtopia.com or some other place then.

I am one of those that played years ago on ION Thunder and then on to Big Fish. I took a few years off and returned to Big Fish and was there when it changed to Big Seas. Big Seas and Paul Thelen should have taken a page out of those other books and he would still have a very well run and profitable game site. Sad to say his skills lacked a lot of knowledge and have forced a lot of people out of their daily routine. I wonder if he fully understands the number of Seniors and Shuts-Ins that played on Big Seas and how that was their lifeline to the outside world. Big Seas may have died but it also took a lot of wonderful people down with it. Some have little knowledge of how to go and play elsewhere and thus will be very lost today and in the days to come. Thanks Lure for giving us a place to spout off and it was great to see ION_Hope’s comment. I remember her for so many years.
Just as a side comment, I too though it was rather crummy of them to not issue a warning that the site was going off. To just disconnect right in the middle of chat, was really nasty. Most people didn’t play yesterday, they sat and chatted with what became their extended family. The abrupt closing was so typical of the uncaring of the people of Big Seas, who promised much and delivered nothing the past year.

I also have played these games for a very long time. I was so very saddened to see them taken down. It enabled a lot of us seniors to enjoy an escape to visit friends from around the globe. As I remember, I became a member when the games were Ion Thunder and it seems like it was owned by The Strong Company. Then it went on to Atlantis and Big Fish then Big sea.

I was crushed at the cold way in which Paul Thelen chose to shut it down. No warning, just cut us all off. We couldn’t check our final token count or say our final good bys to friends.

I will miss all of you. Even though they aren’t the same, I did go onto to Face book.

I clearly remember Ion Hope and Ion Kate.

I feel like I have been treated with extreme disrespect by the new owners, I guess that is the way business has gone these days. No feelings for those who were so loyal to its existence.

I agree with everyone else. Even though I didn’t say much in the chat, it was nice to log in and see people there that you know had been playing for years. I’ll be playing Treasure Quest on facebook and Spigo (not a bad site). Hope to see ya’ll around.

so Farm 52 is gone completely? :(

10 rob September 5, 2010 at 8:06 am

Good riddance to BigSea. When they went out with the chat intentionally shut off, I was surely not surprised. Was anyone?

I just feel so lost….I come here often to see if there is anything new but little changes. I have read the above comments and truly wish there would be some way to connect with the ones that continue to Treasure Quest and Spigo; it’s not the same when there is no one there you used to know and love chatting with. Lure, you have been the one strong consistent ally we have had and thank you for that.

I am just as lost. when i sit a the computer I just what the game site to be thee when i click on it. Online playing just is not as fun

13 anonymous September 13, 2010 at 4:00 am

Is Treasure Quest canceled too? Doesn’t seem like anything real is happening there either. I’m just about ready to give up on the old fish.

14 Lure September 13, 2010 at 7:31 am

anonymous: Treasure Quest is still alive and kicking, for now. :)

15 Sweepsmamma September 14, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Theres no pont in me joining up on the new site cos they have taken my game off “suits me yukon”

16 Lure September 14, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Sweepsmamma: I think you’re just not seeing the full list of games. Suits Me Yukon is still on Treasure Quest, but it’s not listed on the front page. You have to click on the “See All Games” button to find it and the others that aren’t part of the six featured on the front page.

i’m very upset my bingo game is gone. i work all the time and my only relaxation was bingo. i can’t afford to pay for the ones online, that is why i enjoyed bigfish, it was free. now i don’t know where to go for my relaxation. and my husband is NOT very happy with them at all. if anyone can help me find another site my husband would appreciate it very much and so would i.

Hi Lure, thanks for keeping your website open. Know a lot of ex-big sea gamers appreciate it! Just wanted to let everyone know there is another game site I joined a few years ago and never really played it, “Slingo” has been revamped and I have made contact with a couple of ex BSG players. It is fun, you can chat and has a wide array of games for all to enjoy! It is free, all you have to do is sign up. Hope this might make it easier for the people who enjoy playing as well as chatting to friends new and old! Thanks again!

Hi,
I thought I had lost something as I couldnt’ even find where to log in.
What a sad state of affairs. It sounds like most didnt even get the opportunity to even say goodbye.
If anyone has any new sites etc. would really appreciate it.
Good luck and goodbye…

20 Lure September 27, 2010 at 10:09 am

Rosslyn1: there are plenty of sites out there, we’re discussing them in our community forums. One of the sites, Spigo, has offered a 3-month subscription to us Big Sea castaways for free:

http://www.bigseafans.com/2010/09/21/free-gold-membership-spigo/

This offer expires 9/30 so take advantage of it now if you’re interested.

Does anyone know of any plans to put Farm 52 on FaceBook? Or anywhere else for that matter! Download maybe??

24 Lure October 1, 2010 at 10:57 am

Dee: the last word from Big Sea was that they didn’t have any current plans to put Farm52 anywhere but they’d let us know if something came up. If you want, you can mourn with other Farm52 fans here:

Facebook’s Treasure Quest games are acting like they are straight from BigSea today as jackpot spins freeze. Did BigSea techies just get hired by Facebook for Treasure Quest games? Seems so to me.

28 Lure October 15, 2010 at 6:39 pm

rob: Facebook doesn’t “hire” anyone to work on the apps on their site, Facebook is just a development platform. An app is developed by its own developer, so the same techs who did Big Sea are likely the same techs who are in charge of and who have been in charge of Treasure Quest all along. Wish I had some ideas for you on ways to eliminate freezing and poor performance at Treasure Quest, but other than suggesting you clear your cache and restart your browser, I don’t have any clue.

I can’t believe that my farm is gone!!!!! I had been working on it for years!! I really miss it…Snif, snif.

Couldn’t you make a paying version? I would gladly pay.
Thank you for making my life a little bit more relaxed while I was playing Farm 52.

30 rob October 28, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Lure,
Thanks for the info on the XP levels on these games at Treasure Chest at Facebook. Games play much better there in a much better way with fewer downtime than they ever did at BigSea.
Are there more XP levels than 106 that you listed? Any info on those levels?
Thanks,
Rob

31 Lure October 28, 2010 at 7:52 pm

rob: I think there are more. I haven’t quite gotten there yet.

Has anyone leveled past 106?

32 Lexandria October 31, 2010 at 3:28 am

I reached level 110 about the time that Spigo’s 90 day deal was announced. The content at TQ wasn’t being updated, no new games, no unlocking of the “coming soon” Treasure Hunter Gear store, etc. so I stopped playing TQ entirely and switched to Spigo.
