It’s only fitting that Big Sea is celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Day today! Check out their latest news post for more information. You can learn about the history of the day, use an English to Pirate translator, and then join your friends in Plunder for some good old fashioned Pirate Fun!
While we’re on the subject of Plunder, I’ll admit I never actually played it on the old site (and have so far not tried to learn how to play on the new site, I guess I was waiting for a help file) — do you have any Plunder hints or tips for a new beginner?

I was like you and never really played it on the old site. I had only played it one time back then. But now that I have started playing it here to try and win the awards I have found that I really enjoy it a lot. The think to try and do first is to click on the biggest bombs that are not going to blow up any other bombs yet, They come in in three sizes. Small-which must be hit by two more bombs before they blow up; Medium-which muct be hit by one; and Large which ir ready to blow and to affect anything it hits. So first you want to get the bombs as big as you can before blowing up ones that start a chain reaction. Also, if your bombs are set to hit a ship only that’s another good way to start. The small ships only need two hits to sink it, and the bigger ships need three (but they have the best treasure usually). The idea is to achieve two goals: 1. Collect the treasure chests to get what’s inside each one (watch out they will be lost if they are hit by more than two flying bombs). 2. Get your pirate ships safely across the screen to exit off the right side. Don’t worry if you lost some ships. I have gotten to very high levels with only one ship, and actually find it easier to have to clear the paths of only one or two rather than trying to get them all across. Hope this helps. It is a very fun and addicting game once you figure out the way to play. And I agree Lure…It sure will help once the help files are posted for all the games. Especially since they will probably have all the info on the different ranks for every game.
Debi: meh, who needs their rank info for every game when we have ours? :P

Thanks for the Plunder info — I’m going to see if anyone else posts a few hints over the course of the day today and then try to get in later tonight to teach myself (along with your and everyone else’s help). :)
I was playing at the old site when a player named something like Uncle Funky was playing…he(?) was amazing, up to level 70 I think. The bonuses given out to everyone in the room each time he went up 3 levels were very high…I think the highest level I’d seen anyone reach before that was 25.
Someone asked him his secret, and he said that he tried to never waste a bomb and think several steps ahead.
I’ve found sometimes that you want to choose which bomb to click on carefully, for example, say you have a small ship and you have two bombs above it ready to burst. Click on the bomb directly above it so that both bombs will hit the ship rather than one bomb hitting the bomb below to make it go off. Sometimes I even click on both bombs (quickly) so that neither bomb just sets off a fellow bomb. Hope that makes sense…it would be easier to draw pictures!
Enjoy…sometimes I just have fun setting off as much stuff as possible just to see everything blowing up!
This version is such an upgrade visually in my book. The old game was beyond blurry to me.
The highest level I ever reached was 24 but then again I concentrate on getting my ships through. I’m amazed that someone reached level 70! I noticed, in the newer version at least, that when you reach the higher levels sometimes you only have a few bombs to detonate and can’t even move a ship at all. Maybe this player had some choice power ups to get so far.
Speaking of power ups. I try to use up my east and west ones to clear space for a better power up. I seldom use those and some people in chat say the same thing.
Also in the first few levels stay sharp and click quick. There’s so many bombs going off at once that you may sink a chest if you’re not paying attention.
I wrote this earlier, so there is some duplication of what other people have posted. Most of this is from memory and may need to be corrected.
I’ve played Plunder every day for almost a year. Has anyone seen Uncle Funky since the game changed? No one is approaching his amazing scores. With the old version my highest level was around 37. Now I can’t get past 28. Everything moves much faster.
It’s difficult to explain the nuances of playing this game. The more you play, the better you’ll become. Eventually you’ll master the skill of rapid simultaneous clicking. Heh.
At level 8 each of your ships gains the ability to fire one cannon volley that simultaneously goes north and south. Some players feel that they do better with one ship at this point. However, I try to reach level 8 with as many of my ships as possible, hopefully clustered together in the center lanes, and use the power-ups (bombs, North/East/South/West movers, rotators) up to level 6 to save them. I also don’t concentrate on sinking the enemy ships while saving mine.
There is room for only 4 power ups… the little circles at the top of the screen… that are randomly obtained from the treasure chests at the end of each round. When all four circles are filled I start discarding the less useful ones, East and West, by using them on random mines toward the end of a round.
The sparkling treasure chests obtained from sinking the three-hit ships contain (supposedly) rarer items and ships to replace those that were lost. After you find a total of 7 items of pirate clothing, again available only in the chests, any chest can potentially contain the rare items. Some of these rares are labeled “valuable”, others “unique”. For every five uniques you advance to a new rank. Note: to make it all more confusing this ranking system is separate from the “Rank” that appears at the top of the game screen. The top-of-the-screen ranking is based entirely on points and as you change those ranks you and the other players are awarded with points.
After finding 100 unique items you retire and start all over again. The clothing items do not carry over to a new game.
Lure, I hope you don’t consider this off- topic, but you DID bring it up ;). I was wondering if you had any information as to when we could expect the game specific help/how to play files to appear on BSG? There are games that I would like to try to play (Plunder being one of them) but I really don’t have a clue where to begin. While I’m sure the tips above are very helpful for those familiar with the game (and tyvm to the posters) – for me they may as well be in French. I tried looking through the forums for helpful info, but all I found there was people complaining. Thanks for all you do :)
tcfox: I am much more lenient on this site about off-topic conversations than I am on BadgeHungry (the reason being that this site gets 1/5th of the traffic and I don’t hold a catch-all thread weekly for off-topic conversations). With that said… they say they’re working on the help files. If there’s a game (besides Plunder, obviously) that you’re looking for specific help on, drop me a line (lure@bigfishgamer.com works) and let me know. I’ve got a bunch of stuff saved from the old site, plus I know some of the games better than the back of my own hand. Either way, I’d be happy to write up a post with what I know and ask the other fans if they can help fill in the blanks!
Hi! I am a fan of this game and have been playing a long time. I have never seen a luminescent item. Any idea what and where those are? Thanks!!
ellemenope
The luminescent item is a rare, “unique” item gotten from a sparkly chest :) Hope that helps :)
tcfox each unexploded bomb has to be hit several times depending on how “light” the colour is – some have to be hit 3 times before they will explode completely. you have to try and get the pirate ships home safely by making the bombs clear a path for you – as well as blow up the white ships – woohoo the only time being bad is good lol – and while you have a pirate ship in play you keep going on to more rounds. i usually “die” by round 10 and i did finish it on bigfish site – its quite tactical in one way. have fun andgoodluck – i try to play in the room – where has the rum gone if you want to come look for me – jackdragon01 – but being an aussie my time zones dont match up with most overseas
happy bombing
lure – I just don’t know where to begin on a list…lol I try playing most games & the questions I seem to come up with are really quite strange. The games at Big Sea have some very odd quirks (like the phases – which btw I actually already understood) & the gold cards & little extras that I am sure further your progress & should be used to your advantage, but in most cases I don’t know how or why. I haven’t forgotten about your offer & may still take you up on it, but then maybe BSG will add some “How to Play’ sections like they should….lmao
jackdragon – tyvm for your post…it was very informative indeed. Plunder does sound like a game that I need to just jump into & play to see if I am going to like it though. I certainly (from your description) doesn’t resemble anything I have ever played before. I appreciate the effort & I will give it a shot & see what I think.
Thanks bunches :)
