With all of the changes that are coming to the Game Community and the numerous game redesigns, Riddle O’Day is getting an upgrade! It’ll have ranks and yes, new creatures! Check out these screenshots:
The game play is the same — start the game, find the leprechaun, answer her riddle, and then wait for creatures to appear. The good news is that the creatures come far more often and all of them (even the wisps and fairies) make noise to alert you to their presence. Here are the token values for some of the items (of course, this is subject to change before the release date):
Wisp: 20 tokens
Fairy: 30 tokens
Brownie: 40 tokens
Gnome: 80 tokens
Dryad: 100 tokens
…and more, including a 4,000 token Fairy King!

You’ll be ranking up in the game based on the number of tokens you earn, so you’ll want to stay in the forest to find those new creatures!
There are also what appear to be daytime and nighttime forest views (that change as you play). Having played the from nighttime into daytime and back again, I can tell you that it can get pretty dark, but the creatures I found stood out enough and the sunrise was FANTASTIC to watch. Very cool.

hi dee! i’m assuming there will be clues on the beta site that it’s ready to go. still, the ‘scorecard’ and ‘trophies’ sections of the new site haven’t been completed yet. once those are done, i’ll be watching closely to see if we can guesstimate a release date. :)
team bingo hasn’t popped up on the new site yet, but as i said in another comment earlier, plunder and suits me canfield will get an update, but i haven’t had time to post about them yet.

The updated game looks beautiful, and the new creatures are a fun and much needed addition, as is the fresher background to give us all something newer to look at, but the paltry amount offered in tokens now make it hardly worth staying around for long. I’d guess the low amounts will make the game less popular despite the new fancy bells and whistles after the first rush of new shiny game wears off.
I notice they have decreased the tokens won for everything. Why am I not surprised?

To those of you worried about the low token amounts for creatures: there are so many of them popping up all the time, you’ll be getting more tokens than you ever got with the original!

The improvements look great for Riddle! Just a suggestion: the new creatures look great. But there is such a wide gap between the 20,000 for FQ and 100000 for Uni. Could you have a few inbetween those, maybe one for 35,000, 50,000, and 75,000? Perhaps sprites, elves, trolls? Of course, these wouldn’t pop up as often. Just a thought.

Jean: I think all paid subscribers got an email a few months ago with information about and access to the beta site, but I’m not sure. I *think* I got an invitation early because of my site, but I could be wrong on that. I deleted the invitation letter a long time ago, so I can’t remember if it was personalized or just a form letter.

There was a rumor going around that there was a unicorn with purple hoofs worth 300,000 is there any turth to this.
tweetybirdfly: as you can see from the 3rd screenshot up there, the regular 100,000 token unicorn has purple hooves. :) So, there was no truth to that, it was just a rumor.
Lure, is it true that there is going to be a Troll in Riddle O’Day that is going to be worth 1,000,000 tokens? That is the rumor.
Anna: that seems far-fetched to me! Rumor, I’m guessing. Big Fish would never give away that many tokens, they hardly give out the possible 200,000 they claim for treasure chests!

In looking at the night time scene I see the screen is bigger. Will that be the size of the screen. It would be nice to see bigger screens in a lot of the games.
Hi Molly! Yes, all of the games are *bigger*. I didn’t resize the nighttime scene, but it’s slightly smaller than the actual game as I took a pretty quick and dirty screenshot and didn’t try to crop too close to the edges of the window.
I’ll see what I can do to put together a post that will show the new game windows and their new size.

Hi Lure, Just want to thank you for the update on Riddle O Day!! It’s nice to know that all our ‘whining’ has paid off. lol Sounds like they took some of the suggestions to heart.
I myself am looking forward to the changes. The new view looks wonderful and the nighttime screen I can’t wait to see. The addition of more critters is good so as now not to get as bored waiting. When I get bored I write small poems to keep chat room amused !! lol Maybe now I can give it a rest. Hve written almost 50 now…..just to make ppl laugh. Sounds like I may not need to anymore if the critters show up as often as you say.
Pls keep us up to date on any further developments as we are looking forward to seeing new changes to the game

Wish I could get on a beta site too. I am a member but never was invited. I have been invited to do various other surveys and stuff, just not that. Would sure love to though. You know, last year about this time Big Fish Games rolled out new game after new game and it was GREAT! I can hardly wait until the new updates and site improvements start showing up. Every morning when I go to the site I have my fingers crossed that this will be the lucky day it starts. And Lure, you are doing a great service to give us all a forum to talk about all this and to share all the info you know about. It’s greatly appreciated! I check your site several times a day to see if there is anything new.
re: Beta testing: hey, I just *thought* all members were invited — apparently I was wrong. So, I’m not sure how or why people were invited to beta, but I can tell you it’s a small pool of people. There’s never more than 5-6 people online at any given time that I’ve seen.

I too, wrote and whined a bit about the beta testing. They said they choose randomly. They send out requests from the people who get their daily news letter. I get the daily news letter, and was not invited. And if you aren’t invited, you can’t access the site. Someone gave me the address and I tried to access it. You get a very cute page that says “No Access” and suggests that you go play games with a link to the game community.
One real problem for me on the current game is hearing the rustling. I have a slight hearing loss, and if I turn the sound up enough to hear the rustling that indicates creatures, the other sounds hurt my ears.
Could you please comment on that when you turn in your review for big fish??
It would make me so happy to hear the creatures in the forest! lol

Hey HorseDancer: you won’t have a problem with the new game. There are no ‘ambient’ forest noises. There is, however, a thunderstorm that rolls through every once in a while, in addition to the fact that every creature now makes rustling noises. I suspect it’ll be a lot easier on your ears, though, without the background noises.
how does one get the daily news letter emailed to them? Where do you sign up
Hi Clogger, that question’s been asked before in the comments of another post (or two, or three), but every time I go in search of a link or an answer, I come up emptyhanded. At this point, I’m just going to throw my hands up in frustration.

There are two newsletters available. I am signed up for both. One is called ‘Daily Game Rush’ and comes every day of the week, even weekends. It focuses on the Onine Games Section (not Games Community) of the site. To sign up for this one click on the Online Games tab and it’s on the main page at the bottom left side of the screen. The other newsletter is called ‘Games Splash’ and comes every couple days or so, and mainly features their Download Games. They state on their site that people are automatically signed up for this newsletter when they “create an account using their email address” and they offer no way to sign up for the newsletter serperately, only to unsubscribe if so desired. I know of no newsletter for strictly for the Games Community section, though I wish like anything there was one because I would most definately subscribe! Hope this helps.
It was posted in December that there were to be changes to several games. These changes have not happened yet. When do you forsee the change for Riddle to actually take place.
Thanks Debi! The problem is that there *is* one for the GC section, but I have yet to find a direct, linkable way to sign up. In fact, I can’t even remember how I got myself signed up for it. In addition, it’s totally unreliable — one week I’ll get one, and the next I won’t; and I know for a fact that one went out. *boggle*
Molly: it’s going to be *a while*. I can’t put a timeline on it because I’m not familiar with BFG’s development cycle enough to say. They aren’t going to put a pinpoint on a date because there are always hitches in software development lifecycles. It’s just the way things go. If you can just find patience (and perhaps a little comfort in what I can post and show you) it’ll be worth it, trust me.
Hi, i just played in Riddle and someone said that we will lose any tokens that we have gotten from the game when you go to play the upgrade. Is there any truth to this. A few people have said they will not play it if it is true.
Barb: you’ve got to be kidding me. Of course you won’t lose your tokens; people are just spreading rumors to stir people up.

re Barbs comment I think what some people were hoping for was all the tokens they have already won in Riddle to be counted towards the ranks – I very much doubt that as BFG probably dont know what we have won just in that game
Charlie: ahh! Yeah, I’d assume everyone is going to start at the first rank. The ranks advance pretty quickly, though. :)
I got signed up for the Games Community newlsetter by sending an email to Big Fish Games customer support. So anyone who wants to subscribe to that one, there is the way to do it. If enough people ask I am sure they will add a link to do it directly from that section of the site. And Lure is correct. I was told by the person who helped me, that it isn’t sent out very often.

I think the confusion is that the tokens you earn in the BETA testing games wont be carried over to your usual ones, dunno about any rank you earn tho’…. hmmmmmmmm…
Well I gotta say the new Riddle is much prettier to look at The lower points are a bummer but there are a lot more of them so hopefully it evens out.
script4tears: right. I don’t think anything you earn in beta — ranks or tokens — will carry over to the public site at launch.
gamesnacker: yes, there will be sharing. Everyone in the room earns tokens when there’s a high-value chest as well as when someone ranks up (like in BF Slots).

why are you DECREASING the value of the critters from the forest? It would be nice to get them more often but I can see no reason to decrease their value.
More news from the testing front: there’s a shamrock you can find that will give a jackpot spin. And, my special friend mzmunchken gave me a screenshot of the Fairy King! It’s now in the post above.

I just noticed that on the screenshot of the unicorn the amount of tokens is 10,000. Have they lowered that from the 100,000 or could it be a misprint?
lindaridder: yes, they’ve lowered the amounts for everything. They have, however, increased the frequency. You’ll get about the same amount of points on average, from what I’ve experienced.

I actually have only heard rumors that it’ll be 3/27. I don’t have any confirmation, nor any reason to believe that it’s anything other than a rumor. Sorry, but I don’t think it’s likely.
Hi Lure, Thanks for all the info. It is currently 5:56 (Eastern Time) on 3/18/09, I have been trying sinse 3:00 am to get into BF and do my daily Riddle and found the whole BF community has been shut down for maintainence so hopefully when it comes back up all of our waiting for this update will be over and everything will run smoothly as it should. In the mean time looks like I am gonna have to get to bed without my nightly fix of my favorite game of Riddle!

…and I’m still pretty sure the changes aren’t coming anytime soon. There’s simply too much that’s changing (the whole site, every game’s game window, avatars, trophies and scoreboards, et cetera) and I know for a fact it’s just not ready. I’m just as eager to see the changes as you guys are, but game and web site development takes time. Trust me when I say you’ll think it’s all worth the wait.

Thanx for the info…can’t wait for the new site to begin. I hope that in the new site the chat box again will not be covering over the playing screen as it does now. It is very frustrating when you see a creature hovering but can’t reach it!

Nope, Big Fish won’t put a date to it because software development doesn’t work like that. I’d guesstimate summer, at earliest. As I said, sorry if any of these sneak peeks have gotten your hopes up, but I just tell it like I see it. Would you all prefer it if I didn’t share anything until it was released? I could do that…
I for one enjoy all of the info you are sharing with us. Please continue to do so Lure — waiting is difficult, but at least we can see what is in development.

I was wondering does the one that we are playing now have a full screen it seems like items are alomst off the screen when they appear… Needed help figuring out what to do or is that way it is suppose to be. As of now my screen only shows the mushroom she is sitting on nothing outside of that area…. :(
You do a good job of letting us know that all of this is far from being ready so that we won’t get our hopes too high. I think that it just gets lost when the comments section gets this long and not every post gets read. Keep up the good work!

SECOND I NEVER CAUGHT A FAIRY QUEEN OR A UNICORN SINCE I BEEN IN THE FOREST AND I HAVE BEEN IN THE FOREST FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS AND THATS NOT COOL. I HOPE THESE UPDATE IS REALLY COOL SO I CAN PLAY WELL. AND ARE WE GOING TO LOST THE TOKENS WE HAVE BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO LOST WHAT I GOT. ITS NOT ONLY FROM THIS GAME BUT FROM OTHER GAMES I PLAY ON BIG FISH COMM. I WANT TO SEE THE FOREST MORE THANK YOU. I have been playing the game for a year now and haven’t gotten a unicorn either Monique. Lots of people still haven’t got it yet, it’s very rare and hardly every shows up.
Monique, a unicorn sighting is sometimes rare and that’s what makes it fun and exciting. I have played for over a year and have only had 1 unicorn. The new forest is supposed to produce creatures more frequently so perhaps you will get one then. Keep playing and enjoy!

Still trying to figure out if the screen for the game is suppose to be the way that it is. Did not know if I needed to fix something on my end….. It cuts off on the left right beside the mushroom she sits on and right a the middle of the tree on the right…. figured that this was right but sometimes hear rustling but cannot find it anywhere. it would be nice to have face emotions like when you are texting online in the game rooms, then you wont miss so many exciting figures like that fairy queen and the gnomes! Alot of us love this game its one big happy family!
I am gettin tired of the riddle o day. my forest is small i only get half a mushroom at the bottom an been playin for over yr now an not one unicorn. an only one of the big faires.. when is this update suppose to happen? i would like a bigger forest.
